Whoever stands in front of this will see themselves and their world. Just as in Jan van Eyck's Fandolfini 'Wedding' portrait, a convex mirror confines all the surroundings to that one circle. Me and Mine. And at the back, open the door to where the clockworks used to live, and there's a leather-lined hiding place. For a diary, old letters, a sentimental trinket? You and yours. The small Buddha gently showing the way of righteousness, and the other watching your reality? (And scratching his head in bemusement?) |
