Render Unto Caesar

by Dale Copeland, 2002
Collection of Justin Morgan, New Plymouth

I found the doll in an Op Shop. I loved/hated that ghastly stare, smiling but with demanding eyes as she points to her moneybox pocket.
So I made her a papier mache world to stand on, made oval under the weight of the money-grabbers. And with a brass-handled drawer to take the substance from the Earth.
All hanging from what used to be a wall-hung set of kitchen scales, painted and gilded so as you drop in the money the scale will show your worth.

As you can perhaps tell, I'm embroiled in a money argument, trying to get a refund of GST from the Australian tax officials.
We took an exhibition over the ditch - GST shouldn't have been charged for temporary imports, but we paid it to get the works delivered, and now trying to get the refund is like pulling teeth out of chickens. Slowly.
